McConnell Golf’s purchase of renowned Providence Country Club marks the Raleigh-based company’s inaugural venture into the Charlotte market
(RALEIGH, NC) — McConnell Golf, one of the country’s fastest growing, independent private club ownership companies, on Tuesday announced its long-awaited entrance into the Charlotte region with the purchase of Providence Country Club. PCC becomes the 12th private golf club property in the McConnell Golf stable, which now includes a total of 225 holes around the Carolinas and Tennessee.
Founded in 2003, McConnell Golf’s clubs around North Carolina include Raleigh Country Club and TPC at Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh, Sedgefield Country Club Ross Course and Dye Course in Greensboro, Old North State Club in New London, Treyburn Country Club in Durham, Brook Valley Country Club in Greenville and The Country Club of Asheville. In South Carolina, McConnell Golf owns The Reserve Golf Club in Pawleys Island and Musgrove Mill Golf Club in Clinton. McConnell Golf also manages the Grande Dunes Members Club and Ocean Club in Myrtle Beach.
Just two months ago, in December 2015, McConnell Golf added to its legacy with the purchase of venerable Holston Hills in Knoxville, Tenn., a 1927 Donald Ross-design that became McConnell Golf’s first club located outside the Carolinas.
McConnell Golf Owner and CEO John McConnell said he has long sought to acquire a country club in the Charlotte market. “Along with giving us a truly outstanding club in a fast-growing urban area, Providence provides close proximity to several of our other courses including Old North State Club and The Country Club of Asheville. Plus Providence CC is only 90 minutes from Musgrove Mill,” McConnell said. “This deal ties together our entire network of clubs, particularly our corporate memberships.”
Located in southeast Charlotte, Providence Country Club was established in 1989 and has developed a reputation as one of Charlotte’s premier family country clubs. PCC’s pristine 18-hole, Dan Maples layout, redesigned by Mike Gleason in 2006, measures 7,021 yards and plays to a par of 72. PCC is tied for No. 8 in the Charlotte Business Journal’s ranking of the toughest private courses in the Charlotte region.
McConnell Golf said it is plans to spend the next few years renovating the PCC golf course using a well-known architect, while also providing numerous other substantial improvements around the club. PCC’s extensive amenities include 14 tennis courts and state-of-the-art aquatic facilities, with three swimming pools, and a newly constructed outdoor bar and dining area with a fire pit.
“We are planning major improvements at Providence Country Club during the next several years totaling around $4 million,” said McConnell Golf Chief Operating Officer Christian Anastasiadis. “We will focus on new fitness and activity areas, along with the clubhouse and the golf course with a top recognized architect firm. We expect PCC to be the best club in the area.”
Through the years, McConnell Golf has bolstered its bourgeoning reputation in the golf industry by investing significantly in improvements and upgrades at its clubs. In addition, McConnell Golf has recently added two new national memberships to its attractive menu of affordable, cutting-edge offerings. “McConnell Golf is focused on bringing value back to the private club experience,” said Anastasiadis. “We pride ourselves on being the market’s best private club value.”
